Ek Rose Ki Kimat tum Kya jaano ....

' Baharo Phool barsao
Aaj Rose-Day jo aaya hai :)

He tucked his shirt. Straightened himself. Confidence oozing from his whole being, he walked towards her. A rose clutched in his hand and a smile on his face. He wanted to take that rose and do the 'she loves, she loves me not' thing. But then remembered the rose, the epitome of his love was just for her. He presented the rose to her.

And then I saw the girl shrieking, "Nahiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii !"

"What, what?", the guy was flabbergasted.
"A red rose ?"
"Yeah, why ? "
"I was hoping to give you first."

I smiled as I saw the couple leaving. My Rose Day already had got the filmy start.

That was just a little after 1pm, about the time when the college was opening its gates. To the horde of students waiting eagerly outside. As they embarked on to enter Ramnarain Ruia college. The college which on the 24th September, celebrated  the spirit of love and friendship.
For your lovely ears, Ruia is the only college in Mumbai which celebrates Rose Day in such a unique, festive and grand manner.

And it should. For I saw today Ruia draped in its most romantic avatar. Students filled in the quad to jiggle to tunes of the DJ. Regional, rock , retro...you name it, all was doled out today. On the dance floor, ruiaites jumped, danced and swaggered to the tunes of all songs the DJ belted. And to cheer them on this day,we had Amitabh Bhattacharya, the singer of the 'Iktara'song and Sai Tamhankar, the popular Marathi actress,  who made the day all the more special.

The Principal in his address had wished all present there a Happy Rose Day. Everyone ensured it was, as blushing girls mingled with gutsy guys.In the most rosy day of the year, love was sure present in the air. The lucky guy today aka the Rose King was Sanket Palsule  and the beautiful dame who garnered the most rose cards was Pooja Nair, this year's Rose Queen. The envy of all, they were gifted with some handsome vouchers.

Apart from the all-consuming love, a lot of other stuff was at the college today. From just yummy cakes, to Rose Day badges for charity work, was all out there. Not to mention the stalls selling bouquets of flowers. As my friend put it, it was for 'last minute love'. Whatever, love is love anyhow.

As evening approached, the DJ intensified the beats and made sure the Fire was kept Burning on the dance floor. People were tired but only superficially. One awesome track and the people got back to grooving. The music took the backseat as the crowd started echoing the tracks.People screamed their hearts out and danced till the last.

My day started with a love saga. And ended with my own.
A rose can do a lot. As I found out today.

Awesome fun today.

THIS CALLS FOR CELEBRATION !!

SAMANVAY’11 has been such a sumptuous affair, that RUIA stands proud. SAMANVAY has been declared as our annual celebration of all departmental fests together under one umbrella. Yes, SAMANVAY is a new tradition that RUIA has adopted on its Platinum Jubilee.

From 13th-16th September 2011, RUIA held its 1st SAMANVAY. This fiesta of four (4) days was loaded with several events, enjoyable games, illuminating guest talks & seminars, fun-packed competitions and incredible learning experiences.

Students, Professors, the non-teaching staff………… all gave in their best. Our Principal also rendered his help in making SAMANVAY a success. He was there for the grand inauguration of SAMANVAY, where he addressed the gathering. And throughout all these four days, our Principal was seen in all the events. He gave his best support. We are very thankful to him.

Our festival was very well organized and designed. Students of other colleges who came to the grab benefits at SAMANVAY loved our arrangements. Arun from SIES college said, “Attended WE THE PEOPLE on the 13th and 14th. The campus was buzzing with activities galore. The enthusiastic participation from students far and wide was very encouraging. The level of competition was high and fought closely. The volunteers were very friendly. Enjoyed being a part of SAMANVAY!”

Saurabh from Patkar college said,”We must recognize anyone by his deeds and not by his name. And this competition gave us a chance to explore the works of those great people, whose name we always read in our syllabus. Thanks to SAMANVAY.” This is how he expressed his delight on winning the event, ‘Presentations on the works of Euiler and Gauss’, at Mathrix.

On the whole, SAMANVAY was the splendid outcome of our hardwork. RUIA’s collective effort has worked miracles and all are awaiting SAMANVAY’12.

Paper Work At Samanvay !

Today, at the origami workshop, your journalist enjoyed a fine session of creative learning. The artistic sense within me and the craving for visually aesthetic objects were fully satisfied at this workshop, which saw a no of enthusiasts, from a young schoolkid to a college professor all trying their hand at the paper craft.

It was organized by the Seema's Creative Arts, at F3 on the 16th of sept. The chairperson at this event was Dr.Kanchan Chitnis, from the Life Science Department of Ruia.

Here at the workshop,we saw beautiful articles made from the kusudama folding technique.

We were also introduced to the art of Paper quilling. Punch craft, the articles of which I had seen many a times, was finally explained to a layman like me with the most delightful explanations.

All in all,it was a superb event. It was art at its best .

Samanvay’s Smashing Success!! – Day Two.

2nd  day at Samanvay. Reporting from Ruia.

Reconquista ! The festival of ‘Philosophy department’ began with a wonderful speech by Mr. Raj Kumar, an ex-ruiate who was a part of the philosophy department in his college days.   “Cycle Chalao” – an award winning and world recognized brand is his creation. While addressing the students he said “It is my pleasure to be here, at my very own college. It gives me a very warm feeling, just like my home.” “Never fall into BRIBES” was a special message given by him.

Our very own Mrs. Vatsala Pai Ma’am, Head of the department of Philosophy was quoted as saying, “I am happy the way all my students have managed to put up this show. Samanvay is an excellent platform as students from all the streams are coming up and participating in large numbers.” The inauguration was followed by a couple of quiz contests as well as many interesting events.

The second day of “Perception” the festival of Psychology department was again a grand affair. “SEE THE UNSEEN” was the motto of this fest on its second day.

It started with a brilliant and interactive session by Mrs. Sangeeta Rao, the H.O.D of psychology. It focused on the Gestalt Theory. Then they screened “Raat Aur Din”- a critically acclaimed movie, which was appreciated by all. Vishakha, a student doing her majors in psychology said, “It was a wonderful experience, the kind of response that we got today was unexpected. It nice to see, especially the Junior college students participating.”

2nd day of Samanvay saw the students from the Chemistry Department shouting, “CHEMISTRY IS NOT BORING…. ITS SCORING” yeah you heard it right, the chemistry department with it festival called ‘Chemfest’ made sure that their audience didn’t get bored by arranging a number of electrifying  events.

'Choose your Joker' was one event not to miss. The host jovially explained the rules of what seemed like a very interesting game, having 5 rounds. The rounds were visuals, crossword puzzles, rapid fire etc. The contestants were kept on their toes as the judges kept shooting questions at them. Reactions, equations, and elements it all seemed to be drilled into my mind. The chemfest helped students in changing their mindset towards chemistry. They walked out liking the subject a lot more than before.

For the time being, your journalist signs off!! And promises much more interesting reports on tomorrow’s action that will take place in SAMANVAY!!

Politics At Samanvay!

We the People’,the fest of the Political Science department, was a grand success, witnessing much of the crowds, from Ruia as well as other colleges. Organized on the 13th and 14th of Sept, it began with an inter-collegiate event-Asia ’11. An eventful affair, it saw active participation from the students of several city colleges. At the event, teams were assigned different Asian countries, whom they had to represent in the summit .

The Quiz called Athena ,conducted on the 14th tested the political knowledge of the students. Around 18 teams participated in this inter-collegiate event. The hospitality and helpful nature of the events certainly pleased all those present at the fest.

The Youth Parliament was a highlighting point of this fest.Politics , as practiced by the parliament came to focus today at this event. Here, college students, representing various sections of the Parliament, debated the current affairs, a highly intense discussion which saw many a mesmerizing speeches. The Youth Parliament concluded with a host of issues being discussed and the Parliament passing the women’s reservation Bill.

Swapna Samant, from the organizing team ,said ,”We got a very good response, from Ruia as well as other colleges. The atmosphere was charged and the level of debate was high.”All in all, it was a delightful event, outcome of the united efforts of ‘We the People’ team.”

The political science fest ended with the ‘Throne-de-Throne event. This was an innovative game, combining Musical Chairs as well as Politics. In short, no of chairs you win per round get determines the no of votes you get and ultimately you form the Government. In the end, the BJP team won ,with the timely support of independents as well as from the people who switched loyalties and migrated to the BJP team. Poltics indeed!

2nd day of Samanvay saw the culmination of the Political Science fest. People, whether interested in politics or not, certainly enjoyed the ‘We The People’ events because of their gamely and informative nature. As the Political Science department of Ruia showed ,politics is Fun after all.

You Are What You Eat

Burrrrrp! Sorry ,I know it was ...umm, unceremonious but certainly not intentional. It so happened that today, I had just been to the Fest Appetisers .Organized superbly by the Biochemistry department; this was certainly one fest no one missed.

Huge crowds were attracted to this fest as food is one thing which tempts all. As soon as we entered the venue, our hunger pangs were aroused and our taste buds yearned for some enrichment. Dutifully, we obliged and an hour or so later, our tummies filled and our hearts content, we departed, promising ourselves we will be back soon.

A variety of dishes, games and of course knowledge awaited the food lovers on their entry to appetizers. Dishes to name a few, the ones I tasted (its euphemism, I devoured all that I could! )were Icelandic Sandwich(simply great), pani-puri, bhel, sevpuri, (roadside dependable eating here was just Awwww), French pizza, popcorn, well  a lot more too but I guess in between all checking them out, my memory has blurred to the point of forgetting their names !

Games, a variety of them, grabbed our eyeballs from the food for a good time because of their competitive and interesting tasks. The fest also saw a number of posters and charts, highlighting good health and the nutritious food we all should consume.

So, good health I thought of implementing in my life. Alas, I met the Chocolates stall outside. Needless to say, I tried all kinds of it, including the killingly awesome Dark Chocolate.

Summarize Appetisers in one word? As was recorded by your journalist, the words of Mrs. Shamali Bose, Head of BMM Department, “Yummy!!”
Unanimously agreeing with this view, we all await next year’s appetisers .Till then, keep relishing...these memories. We'll remember it  as a feast for our senses!!
